Local Girl Scouts Make Warm Blankets for Cancer Patients

1b
Cranberry Area Girl Scouts of all ages used a day off of school to work together creating nearly 125 blankets for cancer patients in honor of their founder, Juliette Gordon Low.  Juliette Gordon Low died in 1927 of breast cancer,  a time in our history when cancer wasn’t openly discussed.  This project was selected as the Cranberry Neighborhood Service Unit Project of the Year for 2016 and follows several other scouting year projects designed to help the local community while encouraging scouts of all ages to work together for a common goal.

Today, girls are painfully aware that cancer is a struggle for many and they do not want to sit on the sidelines but instead want to do something to encourage others.  In fact, many Girl Scout families in Cranberry have been affected by cancer in some way and several local girls wanted a way to help.  Scouts from Troops 20519 and 20074, Samantha Mill, Andi Mikula, Sabra Richart and Alena Richart, all had grandmothers who were diagnosed with cancer over the past year and they put their diverse skills together to help coordinate the blanket making program.  Samantha was made aware of a need for blankets at a local cancer center while her grandmother was undergoing treatment recently for uterine cancer.  She learned that these centers routinely run out of blankets. Andi, Sabra and Alena learned that there was a great deal of misinformation still in the community about cancer prevention and treatment. The girls each worked with their leaders and the Cranberry Girl Scout Service Unit to plan the day by making SWAPs and posters, researching cancer, collecting supplies and organizing the activities.  Other troop leaders joined the efforts and recruited moms, who were cancer survivors, to set up drop off locations for supplies and help to publicize the event.

More than 70 scouts from 16 different troops, ranging in age from 5 – 17, and leaders, worked together tirelessly on Friday, November 11, 2016 and at home, preparing fleece and tying knots making no sew blankets which will be donated to local cancer patients undergoing treatments at a variety of locations in the Pittsburgh Area. Locations include Children’s Hospital, St. Margaret’s Hospital Cancer Unit where Samantha’s grandmother received treatment and the Cancer Center at AGH Wellness Pavilion in Wexford where Andi’s grandmother received treatment.  Patients, along with Samantha’s grandmother, have already received the blankets with much appreciation.

Cranberry Girl Scouts are Neighbors for Neighbors

Cranberry Girl Scout Troop #24126 is participating in Neighbors for Neighbors this holiday season, and will host a tree in the municipal center and several other locations in Cranberry with wish lists for children in need.

Neighbors for Neighbors is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the holidays a little brighter for local children in need, by fulfilling items from their wish lists.

In 2015, the organization brightened the holidays for approximately 240 Pittsburgh area children.

There are many ways to get involved.  Help spread cheer this holiday season by making a donation, sponsoring a child’s Wish List(s) or purchasing a Wish List item.  A Wish List typically consists of five to seven items a child would like for Christmas.  The cost of sponsoring a Wish List is around $150. One-hundred percent of the tax-deductible contribution will go directly to local children in need.

Neighborhood Service Project – Cancer Blankets

This year many families in our Cranberry Girl Scout community have been touched by cancer; even our Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low, died from untreated breast cancer. So in memory of our founder and in honor of today’s cancer warriors, the Cranberry Area Girl Scouts have decided that this year our neighborhood wide Service Project will be to make “No-Sew” blankets for the UPMC Cancer Center and other cancer treatment places around our area.
We are collecting fleece for blankets and then this fall all troops will be invited to get together for the making of the blankets.  We are collecting cuts of 1.5 yards of fleece. Blanket donations are being accepted by individual troop leaders, in a collection bin at the Cranberry Municipal Center, or in a collection bin at Evans City Elementary/Middle School.

Troops Making a Difference In December!

newspaperWow! What an exciting December our Girls had!

We kicked off the holiday season with a multi-troop participation in the Zelienople Holiday Parade on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Our girls braved the rainy weather and spread holiday cheer to everyone gathered. Here are some more AWESOME things our troops did for others during the holiday season!

Troop 20074 made over 20 knitted scarves and headwraps for donation to homeless in Pittsburgh through Light of Life ministries.

Troop 20545 submitted a gingerbread house for the PPG Gingerbread House display in downtown Pittsburgh and won 1st place in their category! Way to go girls!  They also visited with Punxsatawney Phil through a program presented by the Cranberry Library.

Troop 24126 helped seniors at Rolling Road Apartments decorate for the holidays.

Cadette troop 24131 was VERY busy! They made cards for the local senior center, planted daffodil bulbs for a senior citizen, and donated 501 stuffed animals to “Christmas on Troy Hill” They are still not finished! They are still collecting through the end of January blankets and towels for donation to the Animal Rescue League!

Senior troop 25141 helped Brownies in Troop 26686 make their gingerbread house for the gingerbread house display.

Brownie troop 26524 placed third in their age group for their gingerbread house in the PPG Gingerbread House Display in downtown Pittsburgh! They also packed over 100 bags of food for local kids through the Full Table Project. We are so proud of our girls for caring about the other kids that they go to school with!

Junior troop 26656 put together cookie trays for our local police, fire personnel, and the staff at Hope Lutheran Church. Thanks for reaching out to our community girls!
